Cybersecurity Threats Result in Expansive Job Growth
As cybersecurity concerns continue to grow, so too does the need for people trained to combat such threats.
According to a recent article in Forbes, the cybersecurity market will continue to expand, with estimates expecting to grow from $75 billion in 2015 to nearly $170 billion by 2020. In addition, a Cisco report estimates that nearly one million cybersecurity jobs are currently available worldwide.
As a cybersecurity researcher and a college professor for almost 10 years, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University – Worldwide adjunct professor Jason W. Clark is excited about the growth he’s seeing in the field. But with the ever-changing demands, Clark argues that it will be imperative for those aiming to enter the market to be prepared for anything.
“It’s so important that students have a strong foundation and learn skills such as programming, networking, databases, technical writing, and collaboration immediately,” said Clark. “There is always so much going on this field and you can easily be left behind if you don’t keep up.”
Clark’s assessment appears to be correct as there is a strong demand for applicants who are well-trained and have the technical aptitude along with the creative insight to tackle and solve problems associated with widespread cybersecurity implications including: the need to research security vulnerabilities in software products, improve upon existing network and security protocols, and train the next wave of cybersecurity professionals.
While many see cybersecurity as a government role, the increase in high-profile cyber-attacks against companies like Sony, Target, and Home Depotgives this field a much larger net.
“Given a student’s particular interest -- whether it is business or entertainment -- a student with a cybersecurity background will find a home in a sector that best suits them,” said Clark.
Along with the ever-expanding employer pool comes a realm of job titles available to the prospective cybersecurity worker that is endless.
The National Initiative for Cybersecurity Careers and Studies lists dozens of possible roles from chief information security officer, forensics expert and virus technician to security consultant, computer crime investigator and disaster recovery analyst.
And with a boom in the market comes a boom in salary.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists the most recent median pay for an information security analyst at $90,120 per year with the lowest 10 percent earning less than $50,300, and the highest 10 percent earning more than $140,460.
If you are already in the tech field, then crossing over to security can mean a bump in pay according to the Job Market Intelligence: Cybersecurity Jobs 2015 report published by Burning Glass Technologies. The report found that cybersecurity workers can command an average salary premium of nearly $6,500 per year, or nine percent more than other IT workers.
This hiring, according to Embry-Riddle Worldwide College of BusinessAdjunct Professor Cornel Levy, isn’t going away any time soon.
“With trends like cloud computing, the need for security professionals will continue to increase for the foreseeable future,” said Levy. “And while there will continue to be efforts to automate security tasks, the more security is automated, the more we find additional tasks that require a human.”
Embry-Riddle Worldwide Named No. 10 Best Online Engineering Degree Program in U.S.

What’s the Best Drone for Beginners? Embry-Riddle Publishes First-Ever Consumer Guide to sUAS
Embry-Riddle Worldwide professors, who are experts in the UAS profession, collaborated with undergraduate teams from Worldwide and Daytona Beach campuses to conduct dozens of separate quantitative and qualitative measurements on 12 readily available sUAS platforms. All aircraft tested cost under $3,500, had electric motors with removable batteries, could carry or had built-in HD cameras and weighed less than 7.5 pounds with payload.
The Embry-Riddle sUAS Consumer Guide will be useful to a wide variety of users, not just novices, so they can evaluate options for purchase, appropriate to their skill and experience levels, while introducing them to key measurements for future comparison when purchasing a sUAS.
The estimate that more than 2.5 million sUAS platforms are currently operating in U.S. airspace, with potential growth of up to seven million by 2020, has far-reaching implications for this evolving, $100+ million industry and the public.
“Our hope is that novices and experienced operators alike will use this free resource to examine critical features and capabilities inherent to the safe and responsible use of sUAS technology,” said Dr. Brent Terwilliger, Worldwide Program Chair of the Master of Science in Unmanned Systems degree in the College of Aeronautics.
In addition to the product reviews and final rankings, the guide provides users with a picture of overall and relative performance, quality of construction, ease of operation, cost, accuracy of advertised capability, and user support. The team also prepared a detailed Operational Test Plan document, which was used to identify, evaluate, and record critical safety and operational details of the testing. This document is also being shared with the public to serve as a starting point for novice operators to use in their own planning activities.
While the FAA has vigorously promoted safety and responsible operation, it alone cannot reach new sUAS pilots. By providing educational information to inexperienced operators through its consumer guide, Embry-Riddle can help increase awareness while connecting fledgling pilots to critical resources and assistance so they become responsible, informed, and engaged stakeholders in the aviation community—a critical factor in public safety as these aircraft are integrated into the National Airspace System (NAS).
“We want new users to operate these aircraft safely and within the law,” said Terwilliger. “It’s why we also offer programs like free online classes, UAS workshops, and accessible sponsored research, plus actively promote industry public service campaigns like Know Before You Fly.”
In the next 10 years, use of both small and large UAS is expected to have explosive growth. Embry-Riddle Worldwide’s College of Aeronautics is focused on providing students with the most relevant global innovations in UAS and personal involvement in this growing aerospace frontier. Worldwide currently offers a Bachelor of Science in Unmanned Systems Applications, an undergraduate minor in Unmanned Aerial Systems, aMaster of Science in Unmanned Systems, a graduate UAS specialization, and professional sUAS education opportunities.

Embry-Riddle Worldwide to Partner with Microsoft on IT Training at Camp Pendleton, Fort Campbell This Spring
Molly Justice
Mon Mar 21, 2016 at 03:10 PM
This spring, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University – Worldwide will provide valuable IT training to transitioning service members at Marine and Army installations in California and Kentucky through Microsoft Corp.’s Software & Systems Academy (MSSA).
Today, the MSSA begins at Camp Pendleton, Calif. Next month, the program will expand to Fort Campbell, Ky.
Through the program, Embry-Riddle Worldwide will offer academic and technical training, Microsoft certification testing and practical exercises. Students also receive additional Microsoft benefits including resume writing and interviewing training, interaction with IT industry leaders and a job interview with Microsoft or one of its hiring partners upon graduation.
"This program is an extension of the university's long-standing commitment to the military," said Embry-Riddle Worldwide Chancellor Brad L. Sims. "Working with Microsoft, we're adding a new dimension to the Embry-Riddle learning experience that will uniquely position service members and veterans for rewarding jobs in the IT industry."
Program participation is limited to active service personnel who are transitioning out of the military within six months and recently separated veterans. Active duty personnel will be released from their assignment for two school terms of full-time, daytime instruction. MSSA graduates earn MS certifications, along with 18 credit hours toward a degree at Embry-Riddle or another institution.
"Microsoft is committed to supporting current and former service members during their transition into civilian careers," said Chris Cortez, vice president of military affairs for Microsoft. "Our MSSA partnership with Embry-Riddle will create new education and training opportunities for service members to pursue strong IT careers."
Additional Embry-Riddle program sites planned for 2016 include: Fort Benning, Ga.; Fort Bliss, Texas; Fort Bragg, N.C.; and Fort Carson, Colo.
Through its Worldwide Campus, Embry-Riddle currently serves nearly 17,000 active-duty and student veterans online and at more than 120 campuses around the world. The university's tradition of educating service members began in 1970 at Fort Rucker in Alabama and has grown to include base locations in Europe, the Middle East, Japan and South Korea.

Embry-Riddle University - Worldwide and Microsoft Expanding Technology Training Programs to Five Army Posts
Feb 29, 2016 | by Richard Sisk
Microsoft has moved aggressively to expand its information technology training courses for troops leaving the military that has already helped more than 300 transitioning service members land good-paying jobs in the industry.
"This has really got some traction now. We believe in this very strongly and we're in this for the long term," retired Marine Maj. Gen. Chris Cortez, Microsoft's vice president for military affairs, said of the Microsoft Software & Systems Academy (MSSA) programs that will be made available to more troops with at least six months left before they leave the military.
Building on the pilot program that began in 2013 at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state, Microsoft recently announced plans to start the courses at five Army posts, beginning with Fort Campbell, Kentucky, in April.
The education program was also expected to be available at
Fort Benning, Georgia
; Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Fort Carson, Colorado, Fort Bliss, Texas, within the next two years as Microsoft expands on its commitment to be the first firm from the IT field to offer formal IT training to service members before their separation date.
In addition to Joint Base Lewis-McChord, the program is also currently in place at the Marine base at Camp Pendleton, California. Plans are also in the works to open MSSA programs at the Marine bases at Quantico, Virginia; and
Camp Lejeune, North CarolinaIn addition to Joint Base Lewis-McChord, the program is also currently in place at the Marine base at Camp Pendleton, California. Plans are also in the works to open MSSA programs at the Marine bases at Quantico, Virginia; and
.
An off-base location was planned to serve Naval Air Stations Jacksonville and Mayport in Florida, and the California Community Center in San Diego was planning to offer the courses for Naval Station San Diego, Naval Air Station North Island and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.
An off-base location was planned to serve Naval Air Stations Jacksonville and Mayport in Florida, and the California Community Center in San Diego was planning to offer the courses for Naval Station San Diego, Naval Air Station North Island and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.
LaVanda Harrison, an Army captain who served as an intelligence officer in Afghanistan, was one of the first to go through the MSSA course in the pilot program at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Harris, 34, of Brooklyn, New York, said her background was in graphic design at Georgia Southern College and the Microsoft training was "basically a boot camp" in information technology for her.
"You really have to do some hard thinking" to prepare for the course and commit to it, she said. "Your career is in your own hands" through transition. Initially, "I thought -- oh gosh -- this is a little bit over my head. It took about two or three weeks just trying to understand the concepts," Harris said. "There was a lot of homework to build up fundamentals."
But she passed and now has a job as a senior analyst in program management with Accenture in Atlanta with a salary that she put in the range of $80-90,000.
According to Cortez, 319 military personnel have completed MSSA training since it began and about 96 companies have hired program graduates to work for their organizations at an average starting pay of $70,000. In addition to Microsoft, the emp[oyers included Dell, Amazon Web Services, Accenture, the Department of Defense, Cap Gemini and others.
"Microsoft is on track to achieve its goal of hiring about a quarter of the service members it trains through MSSA and is collaborating closely with its hiring partners to open up opportunities for all who complete the program," Cortez said.
Microsoft saw the courses as "a way to be helpful to our military and veterans," Cortez said, but he stressed that "this is not a giveaway. It's about giving our military an opportunity. They have so much to offer and we know that."
About 190,000-200,000 troops leave the military each year, he said, "and what we saw was an opportunity" in that pool of talent, bringing with them the values and discipline of the military, to fill roles at Microsoft and other employers in the IT field.
It's also good public relations and good business for Microsoft. "The U.S. military is one our biggest customers. We're a huge seller to the military," said Cortez, a 33-year Marine veteran who led 1st Battalion, Fifth Marines, in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm against Iraq in the liberation of Kuwait.
Cortez and others at Microsoft said they did not immediately have estimates on the worth of Microsoft's contracts with the Defense Department. Cortez also said he did not have a figure on how much Microsoft had invested in the MSSA courses for the military, but estimated that "it's in the millions."
However, earlier this month, the Defense Department announced that it would be upgrading more than four million DoD devices to Microsoft's seven-month-old Windows 10 operating system.
"From laptops to desktops to mobile devices, including Surface devices, the DoD is targeting its Windows 10 upgrade for completion in a year, an unprecedented move for a customer with the size and complexity of the DoD," Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Windows and Devices Group, said in a blog post.
The overall goal for Microsoft through the MSSA programs at military bases was to place 5,000 transitioning service members in high-paying STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) and IT careers by 2020.
Essentially, Microsoft was providing the course work and its partner, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, was providing the instruction in areas such as business intelligence, cloud development, cloud administration, and database and business intelligence.
In announcing the partnership with Microsoft last year, Dr. Brad Sims, chancellor of Embry-Riddle Worldwide, said that "Embry Riddle takes great pride in its relationship with the military and long history of serving the educational needs of U.S. service members."
"By combining Embry-Riddle's commitment to high-quality academics with Microsoft's unparalleled IT expertise, [we] have a winning formula for success," Sims said.
According to Microsoft, 92 percent of military MSSA participants have successfully completed the program and of those graduates, 82 percent are now employed or have gone on to pursue more schooling. Ninety-six companies have hired MSSA graduates, and the average starting salary for graduates is more than $70,000, Microsoft said.
In addition to technical skills, the MSSA courses also focused on "soft-skills" -- helping service members brush up on resume and interview techniques.
Speaking from Fort Campbell last week, Teresa English, one of the Army's Career Skills Program Coordinators, said the agreement to start the MSSA program on base grew out of meetings with the Army's Installation Command at Fort Sam Houston in Texas last year, where Microsoft made a presentation.
"It seemed like something we'd be interested in doing," for the 400 soldiers who transition out of Fort Campbell each month, she said. With the approval of the Campbell garrison commander, Col. James Salome, "We've briefed 117 soldiers in the last two weeks" on MSSA and "so far we have about 30 applications," English said.
Applicants must have the approval of their base commander for the 18-week course and also present a resume, proof of a high school diploma or GED, and proof of the successful completion of high school algebra to be eligible. Cortez said a background in IT was not necessary and the courses were open to troops from all military occupational specialties.
Regina Watkins, an Embry-Riddle coordinator for the MSSA programs, said the current plan for the 18-week course was to have 32-40 hours a week of classes by Embry-Riddle instructors, with a mentor from Microsoft coming in once a week. "We're very excited about this opportunity," English said, "and it's going to be a wonderful opportunity for soldiers who want to get into the IT field."
For Marine Sgt. Jose Cruz, who was among the first to complete the MSSA course at Camp Pendleton, the experience was what he called "life changing." For Cruz and for so many other transitioning troops, the challenge of leaving the military and taking on the civilian job market was daunting.
"It was amazing to me to hear that Microsoft was actually interested in hiring veterans," Cruz said at a forum on transition sponsored by Microsoft ahead of Veterans Day last year. Cruz was hired by Microsoft last year and "I still think this is all a dream. I'm living my dream job because of this program," he said.
